A BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRIC LIGHTING

1880 – INCANDECENCE – The first widely adopted electric light. Thomas Edison perfects the Incandescent light Bulb. Replaces gas and oil lamps, candles.

1938 – FLUORESCENCE – The florescent light bulb ( also known as a mercury vapor gas discharge lamp) is patented by General Electric. Wide spread commercial adoption during WWII to keep America’s Arms factories running 24 hours a day. Although light quality is inferior to incandescent, energy costs are dramatically reduced and operational lifespan is increase five fold. Replaces incandescent light sources in commercial/industrial applications.

2005 – ELECTROLUMINESCENCE – The modern high power Light Emitting Diode. Although the first patents were issued to General Electric in 1962, 40 years of additional research and development were required to produce today’s LED electroluminescent light source. Superior light quality, durability, and operational lifespan. Replaces incandescent and fluorescent light sources.

WHY LED ?

All of today’s commercially available lamps rely on one of these three light source technologies – INCANDESCENCE, FLUORESCENCE, ELECTROLUMINESCENCE. Each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages. Excluding highly specialized applications, when measured as a whole, the light emitting diode electroluminescent light source is the technology of choice for many different reasons. When acquisition cost, energy efficiency, return on investment, harsh environment durability, light quality, luminaire design flexibility, and operational lifespan are measured as a whole, LED is simply superior to all other technologies. The ability to precisely control the light spectrum wavelengths and intensity, tune the optical projection and integrate intelligent control capabilities cannot be matched with any other light source. LED will become the predominate lighting technology of our lifetime.

Norway Light & Power was founded in 2010 with the express purpose of providing, LED lighting project design, technical specification, product knowledge and sourcing capabilities.
